Overview
Cantine Mouton Noir is a tribute to Montreal's food scene, set on a small street in Guéliz. Behind it are Aniss Meski and Stacy O'Neill, a young couple who met in Québec. Aniss, a chef from Casablanca, studied and worked in France and then cooked in Québec for more than ten years; in 2019 the two decided to move to his home country and open their first restaurant. Inspired by Montreal's streets and North American comfort food, the kitchen works in a bistronomy register, and everything is homemade from fresh market produce. The menu is seasonal and runs from street food classics to more refined dishes. Burgers anchor it, with a burger of the month alongside the regulars, and the côte de bœuf is aged on site in the restaurant's fridges, sold by the kilo to eat in or take away. Aniss's speciality is sauces, especially the ones with some heat. It seats thirty, its design simple and clean, halfway between an American diner and a Northern European restaurant, with the chef at work in an open kitchen. The drinks list has ginger beer, hibiscus and blueberry ginger iced teas.
